Bettina Drummond on Dressage

This is really an interesting article about some of the misconseptions of dressage and the term "on the bit"

  1. I recently had the misfortune to see Ms. Drummond teach a clinic in the Boston area. While she may have a strong academic knowledge of dressage, her teaching style was sarcastic and mean-spirited. I would recommend against anyone taking lessons from her.

  3. I have been a student of Bettina's since 1986 when I was only sixteen years old. In that time, I have watched her teach numerous people, from Pony Club kids (like me), to backyard fifty-something dressage ladies, to Grand Prix riders. And I can tell you, that nowhere will you find a teacher who is more passionate, encouraging, and generous with her students. Nowhere will you find someone with such extensive knowledge of the horse's movement, balance, and spirit. Nowhere will you find an international caliber clinician, who was willing to teach a girl on a QH pony for free. "Mean-spirited", I think not!

  4. Yesterday I was invited to audit a clinic given by Bettina Drummond. I have been involved in dressage for about 15 years as a competitive rider, instructor and passionate enthusiast. I was completely won over by her. She was kind, sympathetic and effective. She covered quite a range, working with a rider who was learning to post to another collecting his horse for passage. I feel that the dressage world needs more artful instruction and that's what I saw yesterday and it made my heart glad. I will certainly be signing up for the next clinic she has in this area.

  6. I know what you mean about Bettina Drummond. And it is true. It is interesting because I know Kim Robare who was trained by Bettina Drumond for 10 years. Kim Robare's teaching style is sarcastic and mean-spirited just as Bettina Drummond.

  7. I have had the pleasure of working for and with Ms. Drummond and feel that in that intense experience I got know her quite well. Bettina is a lovely and passionate horsewoman and person. She is tough in her criticism but never unfairly and without sound reason. If one does not have the mindset to willingly accept constructive criticism and is not open to changing their riding then perhaps they are just not ready to clinic with someone of her caliber. In the years that I have known and worked for and Bettina I have found her to be a true inspiration and someone who is generous with her compliments when it suits but does not give superfluous, ego-stroking, commendations.
